Chu Teh-Chun (Chinese name: 朱德群) was an internationally renowned French-Chinese painter, celebrated as one of the key figures symbolizing the fusion of Eastern and Western art in the latter half of the 20th century. He is especially known for his abstract art and became the first Chinese artist accepted into the prestigious French Academy of Fine Arts.

Artistic Career in France: In 1955, Chu moved to France for further studies and began exploring Western modern art, particularly Abstract Art. Influenced by masters like Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Nicolas de Staël, he developed his unique style in the 1960s. His work combined the fluid lines, layers of light and shadow, and rich colors characteristic of Western abstraction with the ethereal spirit of Chinese landscape painting.

He is often referred to as one of the "Three Modern Masters of Chinese Painting" alongside Zao Wou-Ki and Wu Guanzhong.

Honors and Recognition:

  • In 1997, Chu was appointed as a permanent member of the French Academy of Fine Arts, becoming its first Chinese member.
